Hymn for the World: Hannibal’s Journey as Music Alive Composer-in-Residence

As much as Hannibal Lokumbe is a composer, one might define him more as a translator. He probes into the human experience and shares profound truths through his music and poetry. He searches into the past, specifically that of the African-American experience, and brings the stories he finds into the present. He serves as the conduit for personal stories and brings healing in places with little hope.

Congratulations, All-City Orchestra Fellow Seniors!

The Philadelphia Orchestra is proud to be the lead artistic partner for the School District of Philadelphia’s All-City Orchestra. In addition to Orchestra musicians conducting the All-City Orchestra rehearsals and participating in side-by-side rehearsals with All-City Orchestra musicians, The Philadelphia Orchestra presents the annual All-City Concert in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center.

Free Neighborhood Chamber Concerts Take the Orchestra to New Places

Continuing its work to reach deeper into the communities of Philadelphia, and as part of its ongoing commitment to community service, members of The Philadelphia Orchestra performed three free Neighborhood Chamber Concerts in April and May, featuring ensembles of varying sizes. The three concerts were held at the Museum of the American Revolution in Old City, Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church in West Philadelphia, and Historic Strawberry Mansion in East Fairmount Park; a fourth concert will be held in July at Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown.

Yo-Yo Ma Joins the Orchestra for Concerts and a PlayIN

World famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma is a frequent guest and good friend of The Philadelphia Orchestra but his appearances last week were his first subscription performances in 20 years. He joined Principal Guest Conductor Stéphane Denève to kick off the Orchestra’s two-week celebration of the music of John Williams, performing the composer’s Cello Concerto, written specifically for him. Ma and Denève were also special guests at the Orchestra’s Cello PlayIN, where over 100 cellists from the Philadelphia region performed alongside Ma and the entire cello section of the ensemble.
