Destination Rachmaninov: Departure

Friday, October 12, 2018

Yannick, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and pianist Daniil Trifonov continue their cycle of works by Rachmaninoff for the Deutsche Grammophon (DG) label. This recording features the Second and Fourth Piano Concertos in live performances from Verizon Hall. The Philadelphians gave the world premiere of the Fourth Concerto in 1927, with Rachmaninoff himself as soloist and Leopold Stokowski conducting. In his review of the Second Concerto from April 2018, David Patrick Stearns wrote in the Philadelphia Inquirer: “I’ve heard most Rachmaninoff concerto recordings out there, and on the basis of what I heard Friday, these aren't going to sound like any of the others. In a good way. Maybe in a great way.” And he remarked about the Fourth Concerto: “By the end of the performance, DG had another winner.”

Bernstein: Mass (Live)

Friday, March 16, 2018

Yannick and The Philadelphia Orchestra’s performances of Leonard Bernstein’s MASS in April/May 2015 blew the roof off of Verizon Hall (“an otherworldy delight”—Philadelphia magazine). Now you can relive that excitement, or experience it for the first time, in a live recording from Deutsche Grammophon. Conceived as a requiem mass for John F. Kennedy in conjunction with the dedication of the Kennedy Center in 1971, the work draws on Broadway, religious, and popular influences to explore themes of religious beliefs, individual identity, war, and peace. The Orchestra’s performances provided the opportunity to utilize a wide range of participants, not only Broadway veterans, but also students from the Westminster Symphonic Choir and Temple University Concert Choir, high school dance students from the Rock School for Dance, students from the School District of Philadelphia, the Temple University Diamond Marching Band, and other local community performers.

The Philadelphia Orchestra - The Glorious Sound of Christmas

Friday, November 3, 2017

The Philadelphia Orchestra recreates its 1963 gold record, The Glorious Sound of Christmas, with an updated release featuring some of the original Arthur Harris arrangements. Guest conductor Bramwell Tovey leads the Orchestra and the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, and puts his own spin on a number of classic carols with his arrangements. This live recording, taken from performances in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center in 2014 and 2015, also includes the world premiere of Tovey’s original “The Rittenhouse Carol.”
