Saratoga--Bernstein, NYCB, Yo-Yo Ma, and Young Friends

August 13, 2013

The Orchestra finished week one at Saratoga with good friends and collaborators. Jamie Bernstein and dancers from the New York City Ballet were featured on Friday, and on Saturday, Yo-Yo Ma joined the Orchestra for Elgar's soul-bearing Cello Concerto. Throughout our stay in Saratoga, we've seen many children and young people. Truly these will be the next wave of ardent Philadelphia Orchestra supporters!

8/9/13, Saratoga Springs: Jamie Bernstein in rehearsal with the Orchestra for “A Bernstein Extravaganza with NYCB.” Her spoken comments from the stage provided a warm, family context to the great Leonard Bernstein pieces on the program.

8/9/13, Saratoga Springs: Dancers from the New York City Ballet take the stage. Their athletic and graceful dancing was a perfect complement to the music performed by the Orchestra, which was once again led by our good friend Stéphane Denève. Pictured from left to right from the New York City Ballet are Andrew Veyette, Daniel Ulbricht, and Chase Finlay.

8/9/13, Saratoga Springs: Stéphane Denève, dancers from the New York City Ballet, and the Orchestra receive a standing ovation. The program included Poulenc’s Suite from “Les Biches;” Bernstein’s Excerpts from “Fancy Free,” and “Something’s Coming,” and “Symphonic Dances,” from “West Side Story;” and Ravel’s “La Valse.”

8/10/13, Saratoga Springs: It was great to have our good friend, guest conductor Stéphane Denève lead the Orchestra for three concerts in our first week. Yo-Yo Ma loves interacting with musicians while on stage. He’s clearly enjoying the glorious sound emanating from our first violin section!
