Bienvenidos a Miami!

February 26, 2016

The Orchestra traveled to Miami for the next leg of the 2016 Florida Tour. Stéphane Denève led a concert at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County’s Knight Concert Hall on Thursday, February 25. Earlier that day he led a workshop for the Leaders Orchestra of Miami Music Project (MMP) at Citrus Grove Middle School.

Denève leads the Miami Music Project students in a rehearsal featuring the third and fourth movements of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

Based on the principles of Venezuela’s El Sistema model, Miami Music Project uses music as a vehicle for social transformation, providing music education to school children throughout Miami-Dade County at no cost. The Leaders Orchestra is comprised of the program’s most socially and musically advanced students, ages nine through 18.

Denève explains a passage of the Beethoven to some of the students.

“I was very excited to see that they all gave great energy to play Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony,” said Denève of the Miami Music Project students. “They were laughing with me, trying hard, singing with me. We were able to make some real progress during the rehearsal. I congratulate them on all their efforts and I wish them all the best for their next concerts and throughout their musical lives.”

Following the workshop at Citrus Grove, the Arsht Center provided free tickets to MMP young musicians to attend the Orchestra’s concert later that evening.

The evening’s concert featured works inspired by Shakespeare, including Berlioz’s Overture to Beatrice and Benedict, excerpts from Mendelssohn’s Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet.

The Orchestra warms up as the audience takes their seats prior to the concert at the stunning César Pelli-designed Arsht Center.

The Miami audience gives Denève and the Orchestra a standing ovation following their Shakespeare-themed program.
