Day Eleven - Return to Beijing--Old Acquaintances Renewed


Today was all about the renewal of a relationship that began in 1973 between The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Central Philharmonic Society of China (now called the China National Symphony Orchestra). During that first tour to China, Eugene Ormandy led the Central Philharmonic Society in a rehearsal of the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, which was attended by musicians from Philadelphia. Following the rehearsal the two organizations exchanged numerous gifts.

Day Ten - A Busy Day of Pop-Ups in Tianjin

Throughout the day in Tianjin, Philadelphia Orchestra chamber ensembles presented impromptu short performances (called pop-ups) for the public. From a fried dough company to a shopping mall, crowds in Tianjin received some unexpected surprises today, and clearly loved every minute!

Day Nine - On to Beijing

While the majority of the Orchestra traveled from Shanghai to Tianjin, a few musicians and administration members went to Beijing for an official reception given by US Ambassador to China Gary Locke at his residence and some master classes at the headquarters of the China National Symphony Orchestra.

Day Eight - Our final day in Shanghai
